Biography
Yorobi is an alias of Josje Bijl.
Even though the start of my visual career lies in fine arts, over the years I've developed skills in illustration, animation and music videos.
Even during my years studying Fine Arts my interests lay in multiple media due to multiple reasons. I've found a single medium to be limiting and only fit to carry a specific message depending on how I'd like to interact with my audience. Always having a strong love for music, my final piece to close of my first art academy period was a music video for which I also wrote the music.
From the moment I graduated however I found myself focusing more and more on the technical aspect of post production and production on a whole. This landed me in various other worlds like that of the post production of commercials, TV-programmes, music videos & motion pictures.
The main theme for my work has always been existential angst or existence on a broader level. Having this influence as the biggest contributor to my work I've gone and searched for various ways in which to depict conditions, emotions and stories. I've always been interested in finding out where the cross section lies between documentary purely as an observer of the outside world as the depiction of inner worlds.
What situations and states of being shapes our perception of self and the outside world? How do we deal with this? Be it personal, physical or mental? What does it mean to be human on a broader scale? Is there such a thing as an outside world and is there anything that transcends us? What is experience and how do you frame that?
The images reflect various worlds, from existential dread and depression to installations or re-workings of old rave imagery and imagined future worlds, with vapor wave like aesthetics clashing with archaic imagery of old civilisations. It all has to do with identity and the human condition and how one relates to that knowledge, experience and broader history.
Nowadays I make art where I can and work on various commissions in motion graphic design (mostly broadcast) & graphic design (for music artists & small independent labels). For this I use both the pencil as I create with Cinema4D or After Effects.
